“I can’t believe I’ve been home for, like, three weeks now,” the teenager says in the tone confirming that the world’s injustice is directed at it. “It feels a lot, like, longer.”

Having read the Teenagers for Dummies book, I know better than to judge or dismiss any feeling the teenager has and say:

“I know, right? I saw this meme that said ‘What a year this week has been!’”

The teenager takes its eyes off its phone and stares at me in surprise and disbelief, then says with a mocking smile:

“A meme, Mom? You saw a meme?”
