“Do you want me to walk in with you?” I asked both hoping and not hoping he would say yes.

The sense of being completely attuned to him had faded. No longer did I know the specifics of what he liked and did not like, what he was looking forward to — and more importantly — afraid of. He was growing up, and we were growing apart. Yet, how could a mother not be concerned about her child on a day like this?

“No, Mom, it is just Monday,” he said, grabbed his briefcase and walked into the office.
